Chilli Pepper Long Slim Red Cayenne - These beautiful glossy long slim chillies are both fairly easy and interesting to grow. Fully grown each pepper is approx 13cm in length! When fully ripe they are blood red in colour. They change colour from green, to yellow, to orange, to red. Mature red chillies are the hottest. Height approx 90cm.
Best results are when grown in a greenhouse or growhouse, they look good in a sunny conservatory or a very sunny, warm sheltered spot in the garden.
Sowing: Indoors February to March
Warning - Be careful handling chilli seeds as they can cause burns.
Sow Indoors: Sow the seed February to March in a heated greenhouse or indoors. Germination requires heat approx 28 -30c. Sow in a good damp seed compost in cell modules or 9cm pots. Cover seeds with a light layer of compost or vermiculate. Keep damp but not soaked. Germination can be slow, seedlings should appear within 7-14 days, but can take longer. Light is not necessary to germinate but will be required as soon as the seeds start to grow. When the seedlings have four leaves, transplant carefully to 9cm pots (unless they are already in pots). Continue to grow in warmth and when they start to become pot bound, they can be planted in the greenhouse border. If they are to grow in a sheltered sunny spot in the garden (from June onwards), it is essential to gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor temperatures and to protect them from late frost. The plants grow to approx 60-90cm tall, in hot weather they grow taller and the chillies are hotter! Keep away from children.
Sow Outdoors also May to early June, but it is preferable to sow seed indoors to give the plants an early start as heat is necessary.
Seeds will be packed in manilla/grip seal packets and sent by 1st Class Post in a protective padded envelope, with growing instructions.
