A watercolour painting, unsigned but by or after an illustration by American listed artist Norman Ault (1880-1950).  Estimated to date to around the 1920s.

It is a picture of a young woman standing beside a pool.  She has long dark hair and is carrying a large basket on her head.  Beyond the palm trees on the other side of the water, the twinkling lights of a city  as the sun sets.  Fireflies show as tiny specks of light above the water in the foreground.

Unsigned.  On the back of the frame is written 'Ruth, book illustration' and after some research I have found that it relates to a 1911 biblical illustration by Ault titled 'And she took it up and went into the city'. There are slight differences however, the main one being that the known Ault painting does not have lights in the distant City.  I have to assume that this is an interpretation by another hand however it is very well painted and it is possible that it is also by Ault.  I have opened up the picture, there is no additional information to be found.

Painted with watercolour, pen and ink and bodycolour on a watercolour board and in excellent condition.   Well presented with a complementary coloured card mount within a gilt wood frame.  The mount is in excellent condition, the frame has signs of wear but remains presentable.

Measures 44 x 35cm including the frame, the visible painting only is 29 x 22cm.

Glazed and ready to hang.

Postage £8 in the UK, £26 to mainland Europe and £48 to the USA.
