Andrew Gabriel Lang was a prolific Scots man of letters. He was a poet, novelist, and literary critic, and a contributor to anthropology. He now is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales.

The Young Scholar and Journalist
Andrew Gabriel Lang grew up in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, the son of the town clerk and the eldest of eight children. The wild and beautiful landscape of his childhood had a great effect on the young Lang and inspired in him not only a life-long love of the outdoors but a fascination with local folklore and history. The Borders is an area rich in history and he grew up surrounded by tales of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Robert the Bruce. Amongst his many later literary achievements was his Short History of Scotland.

A gifted student and avid reader, Lang went to the prestigious St Andrews University (now holding a lecture series in his honour every few years) and then to Balliol College, Oxford. He would later write about the city in Oxford: Brief Historical and Descriptive Notes, published in 1880.

Moving to London at the age of 31, already a published poet, he started working as a journalist. His dry sense of humour, writing style and huge array of interests made him a popular editor and columnist and he was soon writing for The Daily PostTime magazine and Fortnightly Review. It was whilst working in London that he met and married his wife Leonore Blanche Alleyne.

A great stated edition of Andrew Lang's "Rose Fairy Book", 1964, Longmans, Green and Co., London.

Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's "Coloured" Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources,

who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language

sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English.

As acknowledged in the Forward, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual

 stories.

"The irony of Lang's life and work is that although he wrote for a profession—literary criticism; fiction; poems; books and articles on anthropology, mythology, history, and travel ... he is best recognized for the works he did not write.

About the Author

Andrew Lang (31 March 1844 – 20 July 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, and literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk

and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named for him.

Vera Bock is a noted illustrator. Throughout her career she illustrated children's books and many of these drawings are housed in the Kerlan Collection of Children's Literature

at the University of Minnesota. Vera Bock's silkscreen posters are notable for their distinctive woodblock-like appearance. Strong, solid forms, often Germanic in influence (front piece), dominate her designs. Her formation in book design and illustration is apparent in her series of posters. In these designs, numerous human figures share space with well-educated typography, suggesting a quality of wonder often associated with children's books.

She was affiliated with the FAP from 1936 to 1939 as a member of the New York City

poster division. During the 1940s she worked as an illustrator at Life and Coronet magazines.

She continued to produce book illustration and design including Little Magic Horse (1942), A Ring and A Riddle (1944), and Critical History of Children's Literature (1953).

Very  Entertaining read!
