About Tapa Cloth

Tapa cloth, or bark cloth, is widely known throughout the Pacific Islands of Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and others. Tapa cloth has different names on different islands; siapo in Samoa, kapa in Hawaii, masi in Fiji and ngatu in Tanga. The creation of tapa cloth is an important part of the Pacific Islands societies, religions, and cultures.

How Tapa Cloth is Made        

Tapa cloth is made by many cultures of the Pacific Islands from the pounded bark of young mulberry or fig trees. This raw material is dried, soaked, and beaten with wooden mallets, flattened and spread into very thin sheets and dried in the sun. The sheets are then layered and combined to make the tapa cloth. Once dried, decoration is added using mix natural plant dyes to decorate the cloth with artistic geometric and symbolic shapes.
