This first part of the description features a list of Images i.e. engravings from sketches, drawings etc. (these sometimes have descriptive articles but not always). They include:

At The Bar of The House of Commons - half page (hp) engraving. There is a taped tear to bottom of engraving.

The Late Lieutenant Frederick J. G. Saunders 84th Regiment.

Major Henry Frederick Saunders 70th Regiment.

The Levee at New Orleans - hp engraving showing steamboats (one named the Princess) being loaded/unloaded at a dockside.


The Overland Route to India:

Conveying Boilers Across the Isthmus of Suez - near hp engr. shows a man in Arab style dress smoking a pipe, sitting on a camel that has the boilers strapped to it's sides. A woman and child rest on the ground. Another man filling a water carrier. Two other camels resting.

Crossing the Isthmus of Suez - nr hp engraving shows galloping horses, pulling carriages called "vans", being driven through the desert . The article states that each van contains six people.

CONDITION/DIMENSIONS

This is an original but USED antique newspaper not a scan and not a later re-print. The Illustrated London News was a newspaper founded by Herbert Ingram with the first edition appearing on 14 May 1842. It was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper.

Twelve pages (24sides). It measures 395 x 290 mm (15.5 x 11.25inches). It has an age yellowed taped repair to one of the engravings (see scan). The spine is loose with binding witness marks where once bound, there is age yellowing to the pages. The images are in black and white unless otherwise stated. Some of the pages may be loose, and have minor cuts tears and blemishes due to their great age - anything more than minor will be mentioned in the main body of the description. The engravings vary in size. Any watermarks on images are for display only and not on the original engravings. This item will be packaged in a tube unless otherwise requested.

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot guarantee that the issue is complete 'as published' - but what I have described above IS present. As far as I can tell there are no pages missing, but if you're looking for something in particular in this issue PLEASE ASK. If you require information on size of articles (i.e. number of words), sizes of images, please ask before bidding or buying. There are no colour images unless otherwise stated. The process of the page numbering in The ILN carry on from the previous issue therefore do not start at number 1.
