We are pleased to offer a diminutive and beautiful antique stoneware covered bean crock, finished in dark brown Albany Slip glaze.  This piece was found with its cover;  covers were made separately and matched up after firing so there are always variations between the pieces.  The piece has a graceful ovoid shape, an applied handle, an incised ring near the top and rich brown glaze.  It's a beautiful little piece to add to any collection or to a country decor.

Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century.  It was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for.

Much of it was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip.  The glaze was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color - it can be almost black to lighter shades of brown.  The firing process caused color variations as well.  Many of the pieces show the fingerprints of the pottery who dipped the piece into the glaze before firing.

We will be offering a number of these pieces in the coming weeks.  They are great for accenting country or primitive decor.  Please be sure to add us to your favorites list and check back often.

Condition:  The body is in very good condition with minor chips.  The cover was broken and repaired a long time ago as shown in the photos.

Size:  5 1/2" tall;  4 1/2" diameter at the opening and 4 7/8" at the base.
