** AN EXCELLENT INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF A SCOTTISH-ITALIAN WOMAN IN MIDDLE CLASS ENGLISH SOCIETY IN THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF THE 20TH CENTURY **
Album of photographs compiled by Francesca Casella, grand-daughter of Louis Pascal Casella, a noted Scottish-Italian manufacturer of scientific instruments, 1897-1906.
A total of approx. 375 original photographs (mainly gelatin silver, with a few albumen), pasted on both sides of album leaves. The majority of photos with contemporary ink captions by Francesca Casella on the mounts. The album [front cover detached but present] is bound in red half leather over red cloth boards. On one page, Francesca has created her abbreviated name 'Cesca' with a montage of tiny photos. A postcard addressed to Francesca is tipped into the album between two leaves. Photographs of varying sizes, or which approx. 23 are larger [16cm x 10cm to 26cm x 21cm], approx. 270 are medium [9cm x 8cm or similar], and 86 are small to very small [6cm x 5cm or smaller]. Size: album - approx. 27cm x 23cm.
Condition: ALBUM - front cover and first few leaves are detached but present. Covers with some marking. Cloth at head and froot of spine rather worn / frayed. Corners and edges rubbed. No leaves or photographs appear to have been removed, hence the album is complete as found. PHOTOGRAPHS - condition ranges widely from very good to fair. The majority of photographs retain acceptable tones, but a proportion are faded (a few very faded). Please view all the gallery images as this is our best guide to condition.
Francesa 'Cesca' Casella - the compiler of this album - was the grand-daughter of a noted Scottish-Italian manufacturer of scientific instruments Louis Pascal Casella (1812-1897). Cesca married soldier Nicholas Leadbitter (1880-1959) in 1913, and a good photograph of him and fellow soldiers during the Boer War is mounted at the rear of the album.
