Product explanation (extracted from Yamaha product guide):-

This is the basic model of the SG series. While inheriting the form of the traditional Yamaha SG series, it is equipped with the latest hardware and improvements have been made in various areas. The development of the SG series was carried out in collaboration with YASH (Yamaha Artist Services Hollywood) and artists based in Tokyo and London, and has achieved a level of perfection that satisfies professionals in terms of sound and playability. In addition, the SG series is entirely handmade by skilled craftsmen at the Japanese guitar workshop YMC (Yamaha Music Craft). This is a highly reliable professional guitar that guarantees high quality sound and stable functionality even on professional tours that are exposed to harsh conditions.

Pickups

SG1820: Seymour Duncan ‘59

It has the smooth midrange and rich highs that are characteristic of vintage humbucking pickups. The combination with SG1820 produces a warm and deep vintage tone.

Grover locking tuner

A system that locks the tip of the string with a threaded rod. This prevents out-of-tuning caused by loose strings at the peg, and allows for speedy string changes. It has a lightweight and smart design that does not affect the sound or performance.

TonePros bridge/tailpiece

The lightweight design of the bridge and tailpiece reduces body vibration loss caused by metal parts. Furthermore, the design in which the bridge and tailpiece are fixed to their respective studs with screws not only provides a secure setting, but also contributes to reducing loss when transmitting string vibrations to the body.

Graph Tech nut

We use a material that semi-permanently retains properties similar to oil-soaked ivory, which is a high-quality nut material. It is a material that has a long lifespan and has high precision processing such as string grooves. In particular, the highly smooth bottom of the nut reliably transmits string vibrations to the neck material, producing a clear sound with excellent attack.

Electrical parts

Switchcraft toggle switch/Noble pot

Only the highest quality electronic components that have passed Yamaha's rigorous tests are used in the SG. Both the switch and the pot are highly reliable and have been recognized by professional guitar techs around the world to “perform their functions without change even on the most intense stages every night.''

Body material/neck joint

While retaining the maple top/mahogany back construction and SG's iconic double cutaway design, the SG1820's body has been improved to provide the sound, playability, and looks that today's guitarists demand.

The arch shape of the top of the body has been improved to draw a sharper curve than before. The top of the body, where the bridge and tailpiece are located, is made of thick maple material that catches string vibrations, and by designing the maple material to gradually become thinner toward the outer circumference of the body, the string vibrations are distributed throughout the body to achieve efficient transmission and optimal weight balance.

Furthermore, the contour cut on the body back that was used on the SG1000/2000/3000 to improve the fit of players who play the guitar at a high position has been eliminated. In the current situation where many players hold their guitars in a low position, this is no longer necessary, and we prioritized the advantage of improving low-mid response by creating a flat back and increasing the mass of the mahogany.

Fingerboard

Since many SGs built in custom shops to professional guitarists use rosewood fretboards instead of traditional ebony fretboards, we have chosen carefully selected high-quality rosewood. The warm, well-balanced sound produced by this material can be said to match the modern music scene.

Head stock

The headstock is smaller than before to balance the weight with the body. The traditional "flower pot" inlay has also been resized accordingly.

IRA (Initial Response Acceleration)

Players probably know that playing the guitar is important. It is said that the more you play, the better the sound. The reason for this is that the stress that occurs between the wood of the neck and fingerboard, between the wood and the coating, and between the wood and the hardware, etc., blends into each other as you play the instrument, making it resonate as one.

I.R.A. (Initial Response Acceleration) is a technology that relieves stress between the paint and the wood by applying vibrations specific to the guitar to the finished guitar. By applying this process, the guitar will be in the same condition as if it had been played.
