ITEM DESCRIPTION
Today we are pleased to offer this early American leather-bound Holy Bible!
A great find from a local Massachusetts estate!
This antique volume is over 222 years old!
Unfortunately this antique Bible has a text block that is not without issue, however it remains quite serviceable overall! Make sure to see the additional photos in the description below.
The original publisher leather binding on this tome displays quite nicely. It is sturdy and solid with a nice antique patina! There is typical age-related cracking and wear to the leather, though it isn’t flaking and can be left on a white surface without leaving any significant residue. There is some additional wear to the leather mainly around the joints, extremities, and raised bands on the spine. The exterior also shows bumping to the corners and spine extremes, and soiling to the page edges. Otherwise this remains quite an attractive early American Holy Bible! The title label can still be read from the shelf, making this an attractive addition to any fine collection!
Internally this volume is in good shape overall. There is some cracking visible to both the front and rear hinges, however the boards remain firmly attached to the binding. There’s also some cracking visible to the inner hinge, however all the groupings remain attached. Despite this wear, the volume feels sturdy overall. Due to the age of this volume it will still be best to handle with the utmost care, but this tome feels very sturdy. Note that the front free fly page is detached from the binding, and that it also shows signatures in contemporary ink. The former owner’s signature (Martin Stone) is also visible opposite the first page of the Old Testament.
The text block itself has several issues, however the bulk is well preserved overall. The title page through the first 16 pages of Genesis show moderate to heavy wear, including wrinkling, creasing and edge loss. Between 5-10 pages in the Song of Solomon chapter show similar wear, including moderate page wrinkling and edge chipping and loss. And the very last page of Revelations is lacking. There is also heavy soiling visible on the last remaining page in Revelations that partly obscures some text. These sections, though not insignificant, display the majority of the wear in this antique volume.
Other wear includes an edge tear to a page in Jeremiah that has slightly damaged the text; a rip on the page opposite the Apocrypha that does not interfere with the readability of the text; and a rip on a page in Matthew that has somewhat damaged the text. There may also be a few other example of similar damage that I did not spot in my inspection, though I feel I did a thorough job.
Other general wear includes typical toning from age, light to moderate foxing and soiling throughout, as well as a bit of damp-staining in spots, and general wear in the margins including corner creasing, page wrinkling, and minor edge tearing. The bulk of the text in this tome remains perfectly readable.
Opposite the first page of the New Testament is a full page of manuscript “Stone” family genealogy written in contemporary ink.
