What is Theanine?

Theanine (L-Theanine) is often referred to as an amino acid, that does occurs naturally in your body.  Theanine is found in green tea and black tea and some mushrooms and it comes in two forms: L-Theanine and D-Theanine.  L-Theanine is the most common form and is what we supply.

Theanine is similar to Glutamate, also a naturally occurring amino acid.  Glutamate helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain.  It’s said to help ease anxiety, stress, and reduce insomnia.

People use L-Theanine to improve mental function.  It is also used for anxiety, mental impairment, stress, and other conditions.  In a review of five randomized controlled trials that included 104 participants, four trials linked Theanine with reduced stress and anxiety in people experiencing stressful situations.

Another study focused on people living with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.  Researchers found that Theanine decreased anxiety and improved symptoms.

Don't confuse Theanine with another amino acid called Threonine.  These are not the same.
