EXQUISITE CHINESE CARVED STONE GUANYIN

Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)

Superb antique Chinese hand carved stone figure of the Bodhisattva of compassion. The benevolent face bears a serene expression with downcast eyes and a gentle smile, as if looking down upon the world with care. Adorned with a crown of great splendor, featuring a central figure of Amitabha, and several seated Buddhas. The uppermost portion displays two flying apsaras, known as feitan in Chinese Buddhist lore. The artist paid great attention to detail in Guanyin's full lips, plump chin, gently curved eyelids, arched brows, long earlobes, and splendid coiffure. The entirety is utterly magnificent. Beautiful sculptural form with a strength of presence. Impressive from all the way across the room. See photos for all of the superb detail.

Of significant size, measuring over 12 inches tall, and quite heavy. Dates to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). The rich patina still displays traces of gesso and pigment, centuries old. Wonderful from any angle, this fine antique statue exhibits an auspicious, contemplative presence. In person, it is most tactilely pleasing as well. Absolutely exquisite representation of Kwan Yin in China's highest tradition of the period. An important, museum quality stone carving. This rare masterwork would make an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world class Chinese antiques.

NOTE: A similar statue of Guanyin, sold recently at Christie's in New York on May 10, 2018 for $56,000.
