We are pleased to offer a large and beautiful antique stoneware jar or crock, finished in dark brown matte Albany Slip glaze.  It has an incised ring decoration near the top.  It is an impressive piece that will add beauty to any country or primitive decor.

Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century.  It was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for.

Much of it was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip.  The glaze was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color - it can be almost black to lighter shades of brown.  The firing process caused color variations as well.  Many of the pieces show the fingerprints of the pottery who dipped the piece into the glaze before firing.

We are offering a number of these pieces; they are great for accenting country or primitive decor.  Please be sure to add us to your Favorites and check back often.
