Mirrored copy (printed in Paris late 18th century) of a view of the Royal Exchange's main edifice at the west end of Cornhill, originally engraved by Thomas Bowles (1712-1767) and printed by Robert Sayer in London, 1751
The title at the
top is engraved backwards because the work was intended to be shown on a wall
or screen using a ‘magic lantern’, an optical device that projected the image
by means of candles and mirrors: a type of print also known as a ‘vue
d'optique
