    Introduction of actual cars
In the JNR era when rail transport played a leading role in logistics, a considerable number of baggage coaches converted from old passenger coaches were arranged, with steel mail cars, baggage coaches and mail coaches for pallets. A wide variety of baggage trains were seen, consisting of steel mail cars, palletised baggage carriages and mail carriages.
Even after the opening of the Shinkansen, many long-distance baggage trains operated on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines, connecting the Tokyo metropolitan area with the Kyushu area and the rest of the country.
