The Sikorsky HSS-2B Sea King is an anti-submarine helicopter of the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The HSS-2B is almost equivalent to the SH-3H used by the US Navy and has enhanced anti-submarine detection equipment.
The anti-submarine detection equipment installed includes HQS-102 dipping sonar, HPS-102 search radar, ASQ-81B(V)-2 magnetic detection device (MAD), AN/ALR-66ESM traverse detection device, as well as 12 sonobuoy chutes, but as far as sonobuoy operations are concerned, the aircraft is not equipped with its own analysis equipment. The HSS-2B is equipped with 12 sonobuoy chutes as well as an AN/ALR-66ESM retrograde detection device, but it does not have its own analysis equipment for sonobuoy operations.
The HSS-2B is equipped with a tactical data processing system (TDDS) that comprehensively processes data from the onboard detection equipment, enabling the necessary data to be instantly displayed on the scope.
The HSS-2B is available in land-based and shipboard versions, and the shipboard version is equipped with a hydraulic winch for stretching and hoisting the holddown cable as a shipboard restraint system.
