In May 1940, early in the Second World War, the French B1 bis tank stood in the way of the German invasion of France at breakneck speed. An improved version of the B1 tank, which had been under development since after the First World War, production began in 1937. The B1 bis tank was equipped with a short-barrelled 75 mm howitzer on the right front of the riveted chassis and a long-barrelled 47 mm tank gun in the smaller turret, and boasted an unparalleled heavy armour rating of up to 60 mm at the time.
