Pit-Road PIT-ROAD J69 Product overview

  • JMSDF destroyer DDH-181 Hyuga

The construction of the Hyuga class destroyer began in the 2004 budget to replace the aging Haruna class destroyers. It was required to develop various capabilities compared to the Haruna class, and its standard displacement was 13,950 tonnes, the largest among successive Self-Defence Force vessels.
To improve helicopter operating efficiency, the ship was designed as a carrier-type ship with an all-access flight deck and an island-shaped bridge, enabling three helicopters to land and take off at the same time. The combined on-deck and hangar capacity is 11 helicopters, and the maintenance space aft of the aft elevator allows the aircraft to be serviced with the rotors spread out, regardless of weather conditions.
The ship's hull and superstructure have sloped sides and smooth shaped surfaces for stealth, and a number of new innovations have been introduced, including a new domestic FCS-3 modified multifunction radar and an OQQ-21 integrated sonar system.
The ship is equipped with a command and public office, a staff office and living quarters for command staff in preparation for operation as the flagship of a convoy escort fleet, and, for the first time on a destroyer, space has been reserved for female Self-Defence Force personnel from the design stage.
As well as being a new-generation helicopter-carrying escort vessel, it is also expected to utilise its high command and helicopter operating capabilities to serve as an offshore rescue base in the event of a large-scale disaster.
