Hasegawa 1/48 F-16C, “Fighting Falcon”

Hasegawa's kit of the F-16 has been around for a number of years but, despite it’s age, it is still a very good model. The kit has engraved panel lines and the general fit of the kit is quite good.  Plus, you get a choice of a clear canopy or a smoke canopy.

Background:

Production of the F-16C/D began with Block 25 (also known as MSIP Stage II). The first F-16C flew on June 19, 1984 and was delivered to the USAF one month later. After some intial problems with the new model, full production started in December.

Following initial deliveries to overseas units, the 312st TFTS stationed at Luke AFB in Arizona became the first continental US unit to receive the F-16C/D, getting its first planes in April of 1986 and becoming fully operational in October of 1988.

The Block 25 F-16C aircraft were originally powered by the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-200 turbofan, but they have since been upgraded to the -220E standard.

Externally, the F-16C is almost identical to the F-16A. The only significant external difference is the enlarged triangular base or “island” on the rear fuselage leading up to the vertical fin, with a small blade antenna protruding upward from it. This was originally intended to house the Westinghouse/ITT AN/ALQ-165 ASPJ (Airborne Self-Protection Jammer) used on Navy aircraft, but was never fitted.

A total of 209 block 25 C-models were delivered to the USAF. The USAF is the sole user of this block type. All of these aircraft are now operational within ANG units.
