An antique double ambrotype or daguerreotype union case featuring a high relief design on both sides. Rare and original, 1850's "Gutta Percha" / Thermoplastic Double Sixth Plate, Figural Daguerreotype / Photograph Littlefield, Parsons & Co. union Hard Case.
The molded design on the front of the Case features a central image of a Mother hugging her young child while a large dog (i.e., Newfoundland) gazes lovingly up at the pair. This central image is surrounded by elaborate flourishes and ribbon form decoration This design is designated as Berg No. 1-14, titled "Mother Embracing Child 2". The back of the Case features a young girl with a basket of flowers surrounded by an elaborate floral, flourishes, and ribbon border. This design is designated as Berg No. 1-15 and titled "Flower Girl".
Interior accommodates two daguerreotypes or ambrotypes. The paper insert in the case reads "Littlefield, Parsons & Co., ~ Manufacturers of Daguerreotype Cases ~ L., P. & Co., are the sole Proprietors and only legal Manufacturers of UNION CASES, with the Embracing Riveted Hinge, Patented October 14, 1856, and April 21, 1857". Lined in red patterned velvet.
Condition: Exterior of gutta percha case in excellent condition. I see a bit of a nibble on 2 corners (end with girl’s feet). Ambrotype is in poor condition, with substantial loss to image. Gold-tone surrounds have tarnish, most predominantly on image surrounding manufacturer’s text. Velvet is unsoiled, without damage, stains, or smells.
Dimensions: When closed the case measures approximately 3-7/8"
by 6.25 x 7/8”. Each image square is
2.75” x 3-3/8”.
Unpacked weight: 11.2 oz.

Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all
possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear
redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues
between side views.
I gladly accept returns, but please note I do not pay return postage
unless there was a significant error in my description. The item
listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my
knowledge. All dimensions and weights approximate. If you have a question
or an assumption on an item prior to purchase, please ask. I much prefer
to take the time on the front end to make sure you will be satisfied with your
purchase.
Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a
history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw
which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this
does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require
comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
