Photograph Notes: For much of the year the grey seals at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust's Donna Nook National Nature Reserve are at sea or hauled out on distant sandbanks. But every November and December the seals give birth to their pups near the sand dunes: a wildlife spectacle which attracts visitors from across the UK. Very many visitors this year: figures have been given as 5,000 visitors, i.e. 2,000 cars, per day down the single track road from North Somercotes. The Environment Agency provided a new carpark as part of the deal to allow it to flood adjacent farmland to provide bird habitat, but the carpark quickly filled and became a sea of mud. An enterprising local farmer is charging people 1 per car to park on his field (seen here), and has even installed some toilets. The ground has fared a lot better than in the official carpark! It's been chaos, and some people in the locality are simply hoping the seals will go away and never come back.
