During the winter months, the water temperature close to the coastal areas of Florida begins to drop. As a result, manatees migrate inland in search of warmer waters. One Florida park I like to visit to see the manatees during this time is Blue Springs State Park in Orange City, Florida. It’s quite a site to see the huge numbers of manatees that gather in this park to keep warm during the winter months. There are webcams available, where you can watch this amazing phenomenon. Whenever I see the manatees, I am reminded about stories that centuries ago, manatees were mistaken for mermaids. I can just imagine how disappointed sailers were back then to hope to see a beautiful mermaid and see a large lumbering manatee instead.
