In one compartment of the 11.50 am Sunday train from a north-eastern seaport to King's Cross sit four passengers, a young girl, two nuns and a seaman and later a fifth, a middle aged woman dressed as though she is 19. The story is told by the seaman interwoven with his reflections on various topics. The book shifts from hilarious if slightly sinister comedy, through tenderness and pathos, to an almost unbearable tension, pain and horror.
