Karel Appel (1921 - 2006) was a Dutch expression painter and founding member of the avant-garde CoBrA group in post-World War II Europe comprised of artists who rejected traditional art forms for a more spontaneous approach. They embraced child-like imagery, vibrant colors, and expressive brushwork that are featured in Appel's work. He particularly admired the aloof yet instinctive nature of house cats, and often depicting them in various states in his Cats Portfolio. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, Moderna Museet (Stockholm), and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
