Photograph Notes: Roman bathing was a varied experience: bathers would start out in this area - the Tepidarium or warm room. It would be (as you might expect) not too hot but would allow a certain amount of acclimatisation. From there they would go to the Caldarium - the hot room - which would be very hot; before the invention of soaps Romans would use oils and scrape the skin with a blunt blade - or strigil. Having cleansed the body the bathers would plunge into a cold water bath - or Frigidarium - not dissimilar to the Scandinavian method of sauna followed by some snow.
