Photograph Notes: Whilst walking along the canal towpath, we came across these two geese having quite a set to. They were extremely noisy and vicious - you wouldn't want to step in to separate them! Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are big waterbirds with a long neck, large body, large webbed feet, and wide, flat bill. They have a distinctive black head and neck and large white throat patch. Originally native to Arctic and temperate regions of North America, the geese were first introduced in Britain in the late 17th century as an addition to King James II's waterfowl collection in St. James's Park and have successfully spread to cover most of the UK.
