Description
Natural highly effective antibacterial and antimicrobial product.

Bees make propolis from the resinous secretions of certain plants (poplar, birch, pine, aspen, etc.), processing them and adding their own enzymes. Propolis tastes bitter, has a pleasant resinous smell, and its color depends on which plants the bees collected the resin from.

Application of propolis

Propolis can be used internally in its pure form, but many people find its taste unpleasant. Due to the anesthetic effect, a feeling of “freezing” of the mucous membrane and tongue occurs in the mouth. That is why it is recommended to chew propolis thoroughly for sore throat, toothache, cough or oral infections. It is not recommended to consume more than 1-2 grams of propolis per day. One dose of propolis should be the size of a match head; a larger amount may cause a burn.

In its pure form, propolis has long been used in folk medicine to treat calluses, nail fungus and corns.

Most often, propolis is used to prepare ointments, alcohol and water tinctures and all kinds of balms. Preparations based on propolis are taken to improve immunity, treat gastrointestinal diseases, viral diseases, frostbite, burns, fungal diseases, insect bites and psoriasis.

Aqueous solutions of propolis are used to treat heart attacks, strokes, runny nose, sinusitis and colds.

Composition of propolis

While the healing properties of propolis have long been known, its composition has not yet been fully studied. So far it has been established that propolis contains four groups of compounds: wax, resins, balms and essential oils.

Wax makes up approximately 30% of propolis, and it determines its consistency. The amount of wax in propolis depends on which part of the hive it is collected from. The least amount of it is in the product, which is collected from weed collectors and canvases.

Propolis resins mainly contain organic acids, which explain its antioxidant properties.

Essential oils are “responsible” for the aroma and taste of propolis. The composition also contains flavonoids, vitamins and minerals.

In some cases, to prepare preparations based on or containing propolis, it must be heated. Like all other beekeeping products, when heated, propolis partially loses its beneficial qualities. For example, its smell and taste changes due to the evaporation of essential oils. Antimicrobial effects are also reduced. It is for these reasons that heating propolis to high temperatures is not recommended.

Contraindications

It is not recommended to take propolis for children under three years of age and for pregnant women.

Propolis is a symptomatic remedy and is not recommended for use for more than one month. Long-term use negatively affects the human immune system.

It is not recommended to take propolis for people who are allergic to any bee products, or suffer from bronchial asthma, urticaria, or eczema.

In case of diabetes mellitus, propolis should be used with caution.

Propolis is a fairly expensive beekeeping product. This fact determines that the market is full of fakes or low-quality propolis, which is full of various harmful impurities. We recommend purchasing propolis only from reputable sellers or manufacturers who guarantee the quality of the product.

Methods of using propolis:

- aqueous and alcohol solution,

- oil solution,

- whole product (it is recommended to chew a small amount without swallowing),

- externally in the form of canvases and plates,

- in the form of applications on teeth.
