On his journey, the North German journeyman craftsman Paul meets his childhood friend again, the puppeteer's daughter Lisei. The two love each other and get married. Paul returns to his hometown with Lisei and her old father. He is a respected craftsman, but the citizens, who are characterized by class arrogance, are not prepared to accept a puppeteer's daughter as a wife. The constant insults depress Lisei and her father, but Paul stands firm by them. He even agrees that his father-in-law should start his puppet show again. But the first performance turns into a fiasco that the old man doesn't survive...
