After the successful trials of the glider type Horten Ho XIIIa, which showed, that aircrafts with extremely reverse arrowed wings owned good qualities in supersonic and slow speeds, the Horten bothers planed to use the extremely arrowed wings at their design of Horten Ho XIIIb, a supersonic fighter. This design had been similar to those of Prof. Alexander Lippisch and should reach a maximum speed of 1.800 km/h in an altitude of 12.000m and should do service in 1946. In 1944, the works on this project began and had been cancelled in the end of the war.In total there were two quite similar proposals. Proposal 1 had the pilot situated in the tailplane fin, in order to give him a good line of sight. Furthermore, there the pilot sat in what is called the "neutral point", i.e. in the pitch axis of the airplane. Proposal 1 was accepted by the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium, German Air Ministry). A mock up was under construction, by war's end, but never finished. Proposal 2 was to have an unobstructed tailplane and the pilot was to be situated in the forward fuselage in a prone position in order to lessen the G-forces impacting on him during flight manoeuvers, but made all round view somewhat awkward. The engine was to be placed in the rear fuselage. This proposal was rejected by the RLM.
