ITEM DESCRIPTION

A great find from a local New England estate!

This scarce antique volume is over 95 years old!

1st Edition.  Ex-library.

A rare volume to find in any condition!

In great condition overall!  Original publisher cloth binding shows some wear, including a library catalog number written on the spine, rubbing and soiling to the boards and spine, general wear around the extremities including bumping to the corners and spine extremes, and some rubbing, soiling and light spotting to the page edges.  Otherwise this is an attractive, well-preserved antique volume!  Tight and square!  Gilt title lettering to the spine can still be read from the shelf despite wear.

Internally, this volume is in good shape overall.  Both boards and all page groupings remain attached to the binding.  This is an ex-library volume with bookplates and library markings visible to the front and rear endpapers and fly pages, as well as the title page and copyright page.  Otherwise this volume is clean and free from signatures and inscriptions.

The text block of this volume is clean throughout.  There is typical age-related toning to the pages, as well as light foxing and soiling scattered throughout, and some light general edge wear.  Otherwise this volume is clean and free from rips, tears, writing and markings.  Perfectly readable throughout!

Nicely illustrated with full page portraits.  Make sure to see the additional photographs in the description below for a through look through this antique volume!

491 pages.

Measures approximately 9 1/4 inches tall by 6 1/2 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches thick.

John Devoy (1842–1928) was an Irish rebel leader and exile, known for his involvement in the Fenian movement. Born in County Kildare, Devoy became involved in Irish nationalist activities from a young age and joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) in 1861. He participated in the Fenian Rising of 1867, for which he was imprisoned, but later managed to escape to the United States. In America, he played a significant role in organizing and funding the Fenian movement, advocating for Irish independence through various means, including journalism and political activism. Devoy's efforts were instrumental in keeping the Fenian cause alive during challenging times, and he maintained close ties with Irish nationalist leaders and organizations. Despite setbacks and betrayals, Devoy remained dedicated to the cause of Irish freedom throughout his life, influencing generations of Irish Americans and leaving a lasting legacy in the struggle for Irish independence.
