History and Background of Romanian Magazine Pouches

The first magazine pouch used by the Romanians in the post-WWII era for their 7.62x39 small arms was a leather 4-cell version in either brownish red leather or black leather. Used extensively in the Romanian revolution of 1989, the texture on these is bumpy and rough. These are very hard to come by, but have surfaced recently in new-in-the-box imported rifles.

The standard magazine pouch that was used for 7.62 magazines is a drab green canvas-like material, 2-cell or 3-cell affair, which holds the magazines vertically, side-by-side. There are two variants: 1) one with lighter color brown leather straps, and 2) one with darker color brown leather straps. The darker variant seems to have a thicker and heavier cloth material.

The closures are metal buttons on the pouch over which brown leather straps with holes can be fastened. When viewed from the front, there is a small pocket for an oil bottle on the upper-left side and a pocket for a tube style cleaning kit on the right. The back has two webbed straps that allow its attachment to a belt. Upon transitioning to the 5.45 caliber rifles, a 3-cell version of the 7.62x39 pouch was designed that could accommodate either type of magazine.

Another pouch used with other Romanian rifles was a 4-cell design with nylon strap closures.

There are various pouches that are often seen, such as the 4-cell that is meant to hold 40-round magazines for the heavier small arms. It has a built-in carrying strap and one pocket on the front for an oil bottle.

There is also a pouch for the 75-drum magazine that is often seen with the famous large small arm that uses this device.

Other well-known Romanian large small arms use a pouch that has 4 pockets for 5-round magazines. There are three known variants of this pouch.
