SIGNED Frans Lauwers (1854–1931) Engraving & Etching "EAGLES" after Jan Fyt, Flemish (1611–1661)


  • For your consideration is an original antique engraving and etching, displaying a powerful scene of two eagles devouring prey

  • Done by prominent Flemish engraver, painter and pastelist François 'Frans' Lauwers (1854–1931). Born and active in Antwerp, Belgium he was the recipient of the Prix de Rome for engraving in 1874

  • This work is after a famous painting, known by the title "Eagles", by the great Flemish Baroque master Animalist Johannes 'Jan' Fijt (transl. as Fyt) (1609-1661). He was one of the leading still life and Animalia artists of the 17th century, widely considered to be master of Pieter Boel (1622-1674)

  • This engraving is signed in the margin between the scene and the plate mark, by hand in pencil lower right - F. LAUWERS

  • Framed and matted, under glass in a simple dark tone wood frame
  • All original, a 19th century first edition print


  • Measurements: Approx. 35" x 29" framed; 22" x 16" the scene; 23.5" x 18" the sheet
  • Weighs about 16 lbs. 2 oz.
