18th C Wedgwood Black Basalt Medallion Cameo Portrait of LE SEUEUR


  • For your consideration is an impressive oval cameo portrait made of black basalt
  • It features a 17th century man profile facing right
  • He is Eustache Le Sueur (1617-1655), a French artist, one of the founders of the French Academy of Painting. He is known primarly for his paintings of religious subjects. Le Sueur was a leading exponent of the neoclassical style of Parisian Atticism movement.
  • Masterly depicted with great detail
  • The plaque is marked Wedgwood on the back with the mixed-case mark, with individual impressions made by using movable type printers, each letter separately, which dates this example before the 1780s
  • Circa 1767–1780, England
  • Very RARE

  • Measurements: Approximately 2.05" x 1.65" 

  • Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. Two hardly discernable surface flakes at the edge, one upfront under the letters LE, the other on the back. All original.
