YOU ARE BUYING "The Bloomer Schottisch" sheet music from 1851 with a nice lithograph front cover depicting a young woman wearing a "Bloomer Costume."  The sheet music piece is dedicated to "Mrs. Bloomer and the Ladies in Favor of the Bloomer Costume."  This contemporaneous piece of sheet music documents the very beginnings of the dress reform movement, which started in 1851, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the famous leader in the struggle for women's rights, and her neighbor, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, began wearing a radical new style of dress first designed by Stanton's cousin, Elizabeth Smith Miller. Amelia Jenks Bloomer, for whom the garment is now named, wrote rave reviews about the style in The Lily, a newspaper by and for women which she ran. This led to a massive spike in the garment’s popularity, leading it to take on the new name of “bloomers” or “the bloomer.” Those who wore bloomers visibly were often ridiculed and ostracized, leading many to return to more conventional dress. However, bloomers continued to be worn as an undergarment similar to pantalettes, made to be fastened at the waist and to fall around the knee.  Bloomers were a powerful symbol of the shifting roles and societal expectations of women and were worn by many prominent suffragists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

This sheet music is about is about  10" x 13" and is in overall very good condition. PLEASE CAREFULLY REVIEW THE DETAILED HIGH-RESOLUTION PHOTOS TO ASSESS THE QUALITY AND CONDITION OF THIS SHEET MUSIC.  PLEASE SEND ME ANY QUESTIONS IF THE CONDITION OF THE ITEM IS DOUBT.
