This is a thank you letter dated “Callander Ontario Dec. 28 1936,”signed by Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, attending physician to the Dionne Quintuplets.

This typewritten and correspondence, printed on ‘The Dionne Quintuplet Guardianship’ letterhead, signed by Dafoe in black ink, acknowledged a book sent to Dafoe from Willis Thornton at NEA Service Inc., which handled all official press relations (photography, stories, etc.) for the Quintuplets for many years.

Although in very good condition, it appears a narrow strip running down the full length of the page, was likely exposed to sunlight due to the slight discolouration from the rest of the of the page, and also discolouring the ‘foe’ of Dafoe’s signature.

There was an ongoing furor behind the scenes throughout the Dionne Quintuplets’ informative years between the parents, government, and the Guardianship of the girls, of which Dr. Dafoe was in charge.

As a result of a contract negotiated by the Guardianship, of which Dafoe led, the NEA (Newspaper Enterprises of America) held all publishing rights of photos and stories of the five Dionnes with Dafoe only. The parents and siblings were not included so never appeared in any media with the five girls until the early 1940s, when the contract ended.
