If this reference achieves its goal, it will give you, someone living in a city or suburb, enough information to help prevent and prepare for emergencies and disasters. They are not fun to think about, but they happen, and you need to be ready. This is not an end of the world / run off to a compound in the woods book for extreme survivalists, and if that's what you are looking for, you will have no trouble finding material to meet your needs elsewhere. But if you are reading this to get basic, clearly explained information on how to prevent and survive weather-related or human-caused emergencies, and if you feel a little lost and maybe don't know where to begin, then this reference is geared toward you.

Kelly Runer was never a Girl Scout, never in the military--she's an English teacher, of all things. She's studied and practiced disaster preparedness because she cares passionately about protecting her family, friends, and own skin. There is a wonderful sense of freedom that comes with working toward self-sufficiency and feeling some sense of control in such a chaotic world, no matter who you are. Anybody can learn it. Kelly Runer lives happily in northeast Ohio where she doesn't have to worry about tsunamis, hurricanes, or volcanoes. The winter storms are another matter altogether.
