Collectible tile depicting the New York state seal. Impressed stamped with the Westraven Holland makers mark on back (covered by paper - I know this because I have the Virginia tile from the same estate - see item 235463249199). Westraven is located in Utrecht, Netherlands (Holland).
Sawtooth picture hanger on reverse. Professionally framed. Two bumper pads on lowest back corners so piece hangs straight on wall. Frame is ebonized with a circular motif.
In 1844, the brothers Huibert and Hendrik Ravesteyn took over a roofing tile factory that was based in Utrecht since 1661. They started producing hand-painted tiles under the name Gebroeders Ravesteyn. In 1907, under a new owner, the name was changed to Westraven. Westraven produced traditional Dutch tiles, tile panels, cloisonné tiles and various handmade building ceramics. From 1926 onwards also pots and vases by, among others, designer Cris Agterberg were produced.
Westraven became an important producer of handmade
and handpainted tiles in the Netherlands. Large and unique tile pictures were
made for butchers, grocery stores, bank buildings, hotels and wherever the
customer wanted. Other tile pictures were produced in series, with popular
images of peasant life, landscapes, ships or more figurative and floral scenes.
In 1963, Westraven was taken over by De Porceleyne
Fles in Delft. Handpainting was slowly phased out to be replaced by transfer
technology. By 1994, when production moved from Utrecht to Delft, all
production was made with transfers. Since then, De Porceleyne Fles has
continued to produce under the name of Westraven good-quality Delft style tiles
and plates using transfer technology

Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a
history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw
which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this
does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require
comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
