About Country Life Magazine:

An early lifestyle magazine, Country Life was launched in 1897 by Edward Hudson, the owner of Lindisfarne Castle, and various Edwin Lutyens-designed houses including The Deanery in Sonning, and Plumpton Place, Sussex. The magazine was launched in partnership with George Newnes Ltd. Hudson bought out Newnes in 1905. Features and articles in the early days included fishing, golf, equestrian interests, hunting, racing, etc, as well as country houses, stately homes, and manorial estates, which still feature in the magazine today. Gertrude Jekyll the British horticulturist, garden designer, and active in the Arts and Crafts movement, etc. often wrote gardening articles for the magazine. Over the years the magazine incorporated a reive range of subjects, from gardens and gardening, farming, architecture and interiors, fine art, wines, travel, books, theatre, property for sale supplements, rural issues, etc.
The frontispiece of each issue usually features a portrait photograph of a young woman of society, which, in earlier years, was known as "girls in pearls".  Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the late Queen Mother often featured on the front cover. On occasion, it would also feature a man of society.
