The Sacred Valley is a wellspring of important archaeological sites and beautiful natural landscapes.

A classic tour of the Sacred Valley takes you to some of the most impressive ruins in the area, including the Pisac Archaeological Park and the Ollantaytambo Fortress.

The Sacred Valley, also known as the Urubamba Valley, is a valley in Peru's Andean highlands that was a key part of the Inca Empire.

It's located in the Cusco region, north of the Inca capital, and runs west to east along the Urubamba River.

The valley stretches about 60 kilometers and includes fertile farmland, Spanish colonial villages, and archaeological sites.

The valley was incorporated into the Inca Empire between 1000 and 1400 because it was warmer than other areas due to its lower elevation.

The valley's fertile soil was a major food source for the highland cities, and it's also dotted with many sacred Inca sites.

The valley is a gateway to Machu Picchu, and was an important area for constructing checkpoints and the main path from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

The valley includes the following sites: Pisac Archaeological Park, Ollantaytambo Fortress, Pisac, and Machu Picchu's citadel.

The valley's modern name comes from the original Quechua name, Willka Qhichwa, which means "Sacred Valley". In Quechua, the Urubamba River is known as the Willkamayu, which means "Sacred River".
