"The Widow Lerouge" is a novel by Émile Gaboriau, originally published in French in 1866 and translated into English by Fred Williams in 1900. It is considered the first detective novel and played a significant role in the development of the detective, crime, and murder mystery genres. The story revolves around the investigation of the mysterious disappearance and murder of the titular character, Madame Lerouge, who lived alone in a small village outside Paris. The protagonist, Pere Tabaret, an eccentric and mysterious figure, uses his keen observations and reasoning skills to solve the case, demonstrating early examples of detective work that would later influence writers like Arthur Conan Doyle. The novel features a dry sense of humor and unexpected plot twists, making it an enjoyable read for fans of mystery fiction.
