Hit by flak, crashed at Bergbossendorf, near Haltern, Germany June 22, 1943. The Pilot: 1st Lt. Ray Jess, Navigator: Bob Davidson, Bombardier: Jim Montgomery, Radio Operator: Joe Godzinski, Ball turret gunner: Byron Johnson, and Tail gunner: Frank White were killed in action. Co-pilot: Harry Gunn, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Harry Smith, Left waist gunner: Sidney Hal and Right waist gunner: Charless Hardacre were taken prisoner.
B-17F-50-BO (42-5483), “RED ASS”, Flown by Capt. Pharis C. Brinkley, 360th BS/303rd BG, Molesworth, September 1943
RED ASS went Missing in Action over Bremen, on November 11, 1943. The aircraft was hit by flak and enemy aircraft, crashed near Renslage, six miles west of Quackenbruck, Germany. The Pilot: Finis Brumbeloe, Co-pilot: Donnell Marsh, Navigator: Jim Groves, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Pete Kiebish, Radio Operator: Irwin Johnson, Tail gunner: Bill Perryman, Bombardier: Chas Garneau, Waist gunner: Bill Steele, Ball turret gunner: Howard Payton and Waist gunner: Dave Hoffman were all taken prisoner.
