Description

VERY GOOD Cond even though there are some LIGHT marks to the outer white framed edges (does not affect the image at all) and it is still a lovely postcard and perfectly suitable for framing as a miniature painting - genuine original postcard produced by Raphael Tuck & Sons, England - sent in 1908 from Newtown to Mrs Cox, "Ardo", The Avenue, Hurstville (NSW) - see scans of both sides

Interesting historical info about the house that this postcard was sent to - actually mentions Miss Cox in the records kept by The Hurstville Heritage Inventory!
95 The Avenue, Hurstville - Built in 1885-1886, it was the first house in The Avenue, Hurstville and is probably the oldest house still standing in Hurstville. The house was owned by the Sydney and Provincial Land Building Company, Ltd., who purchased the surrounding 40 acres in 1882. It was occupied by Charles R. Creed, an accountant. (It is possible that he was the local agent of the Sydney and Provincial Land and Building Co.) Catherine Hall, the wife of Thomas Hall, a railway station master of Hurstville purchased lots 91, 92 and 93 of D.P. 1595 from the Sydney and Provincial Land and Building company in liquidation on 5th June, 1897, which included the house, which was let to Mrs. A. L. Cooper for the next few years. William W. Prescott then lived in the house until 1907, and Isabella Prescott purchased it on 17th March, 1908. It was let to Mrs. Emily Cox, and named 'Ardo' in 1908-1909, and to George Madden in 1911-1912. Alfred Leslie Blackshaw, a clerk of Hurstville, well known in the cricket club, and as an alderman of Hurstville Council, purchased the property on 16th August, 1913, and let it to Herbert L. Riley and then Henry S. Secomb, J.P.
Also, interestingly, the postcard is from B Prescott, who is probably the abovmentioned William Prescott who lived in the house prior to Mrs Cox. The message is a little mysterious saying in part "Received Essie's note re matter you spoke of when last at Ardo ..."
