I cannot express how delighted I was to find this piggy bank in the wild. It's that feeling of excitement finding something from your youth.  I actually have personal experience with this particular model, so I can share a bit more what I know about it.

When I was extremely young (i.e. 3 -4 years old), my parents needed to buy my elder sister and I "big girl beds" as the cribs were needed for younger siblings on the way.  This was approx. 1961 in San Antonio, Texas, close to Randolph Air Force Base. My parents came home with bunk beds AND three of these piggy banks (one for each child).  Ours were all a different variation of tan, brown, black, and cream spots.  I don't know if these were purchased separately or part of a give-away with furniture purchase. But, as any military family will tell you, with frequent moves, the pig banks were one of the few heirlooms we were allowed to keep, but they soon disappeared.

As an antique dealer in the business for more than 40 years, I have only come across one other bank in this form, regardless of color. And I bought it on the spot. It has pride of place in my collections. Lo and behold, I found TWO in the same estate, being the only other ones I have ever seen.  I have looked for this model whenever I see piggy banks, so I KNOW how rare it is. And, I know also how rare it is to get a piggy bank that looks like a life-like pig.

Well, enough with the trip down memory lane.  The take away from this is I how I know this pig dates to circa 1960. This is estate fresh from a Texas pig collector. It is light weight - possibly chalk, but with a better finish on it than regular chalkware pieces. Hand painted. I know this is made in Mexico because the other found piece is hallmarked on the bottom "Made in Mexico".

Condition: Excellent giftable condition. Only mentionable issue: one paint spot missing on right ear rim and one on collar center top. Given softness of ceramic, actually quite good condition commiserate with age & use. No visible crazing or discoloration. No chips, flakes, breaks, mends, repairs, cracks, hairlines, blemishes, or mentionable boo-boo's. Don't feel anything amiss when I run finger around edges. No signs of previous repair or restoration. Underside has light surface scratches from being moved around a flat surface. .
