An original antique, copper-engraved map of the county of Nottinghamshire Comitatus Nottinghamiensis sive Nottinghamshire, published by P. Schenk and G. Valk in Amsterdam in c.1700. Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk acquired Jan Jansson’s copper plates in 1694 and republished his maps singly or in composite atlases with slight alterations and with their own imprint (bottom left beside the title cartouche).

The map has significant detail of settlements and is extremely decorative with an attractive title cartouche, distance scale, seven shields with putti top left, and the British Royal Arms top right. It has early hand-colouring and measures approximately 472mm x 370mm with generous margins beyond and is blank verso.

Condition report: the overall condition is very good. The sheet has previously been mounted and laid down on mounting board which has resulted in overall toning (the top left and right corners of the sheet have previously had mounting tape attached verso so are lighter  in colour than the rest of the sheet). Other than this there is a pinprick sized hole just below the first shield in the top left corner and only visible when the sheet is held up to the light; and a 2cm closed tear at the base of the centrefold well away from the printed area. There is very neat old writing at the bottom left edge of the sheet ‘Grosbritannien. England. Mercia. _ Nottinghamshire.’ possibly for cataloguing purposes at some point. See photographs.
