19th C. Lead or Pewter Traveling Icon - St. John Baptist, The Forerunner, Imperial Russia


  • For your consideration is an antique Russian Orthodox lead or pewter traveling icon 
  • Unusual and rare image, very well detailed
  • A depiction of Saint John the Baptist holding a baptismal font with the little Jesus 
  • The Eastern Orthodox iconography often presents this saint with wings. As well as "The Baptist" Saint John is also known as "The glorious prophet and forerunner of Christ". Therefore the presence of wings is to symbolize his status of divine messenger 
  • It is a small icon, intended to be a traveling relic carried for veneration and protection
  • Saint John is believed to help protect families from harm in times of trouble
  • Old Cyrillic text on both sides of the hallo
  • Circa 19th century, Imperial Russia

  • Measurements: Approx. 5.25" x 4.5" x 7mm
  • Weighs about 1lb. 1 oz.
