RARE 17th-18th C. Spanish Colonial Paper and Silk Diorama Picture of Saint Benedict


  • For your consideration is very interesting early religious picture
  • A small diorama image created with paper and silk under glass
  • It portrays Saint Benedict of Nursia, dressed as a monk, holding a book
  • His face is very expressive, lost in devotion and meditation
  • The quill pen and an inkwell on the table suggest that he is possibly working on manuscript
  • It is presented in a period carved gilt wood frame
  • Circa 17th/18th century. Possibly Peninsular Spain suggested by the masterful rendition of his face and overall appearance, along with the finely carved frame

  • Measurements: Approx. 9 1/8" x 4.75" framed; 3.75" x 2.75" the image only
  • Weighs about 4 oz.

  • Condition: Good/Very Good overall. Please see photos. Slight to moderate fading and discoloration, expected normal deterioration of the silk, consistent with age. All original.
