Antique 1700's Betty Lamp Black Early American Whale Oil Lamp with Hinged Lid


  • For your consideration is an early American lightening devise
  • A Betty Lamp all hand made of tin sheet with iron wire hanging hoop
  • It is half way sealed with a small lid, attached with hand rolled tin hinges
  • It has a little spout, which was used to pour the grease inside; then a wick of twisted cloth would be inserted, ignited and the light would be on
  • It would usually burn whale or other fish oil, fat trimmings or liquid or semi-liquid grease
  • The spout is not fixed to the body and could be pulled out
  • Circa late 18th century, New England
  • A very early piece, hard to find 
  • All original

  • Measurements: Approx. 7" x 4" x 3.5"
  • Weighs about 5 oz.

  • Condition: Very Good overall. No holes or or cracks, the seams look sealed. Patinated oxidation, commensurate with age and use. Please see photos. All original.
