Antique Painted Weathervane Sign Austrian ALPINE Mountain Hiking Cabin Chalet

  • For your consideration is a very interesting piece of antique signage, from a Mountain Cabin or Chalet in the forests of the Austrian Alps
  • It was used as a finial for a large weathervane, most likely atop the cabin or on a standalone pole, to indicate the location for hikers and tourists

  • From the town of Kaltenleutgeben (Central Bavarian: Koidnleitgebn), Lower Austria, in the Southern Vienna Woods. Due to the close proximity to the capital of Vienna, it is a popular recreational spot for people from the city

  • Made of hammered wrought iron, highly decorative, with a scroll and a ring form surrounding the central shield
  • All hand painted
  • Displays a mountain peak with a star and crescent on either side
  • Inscribed all around - ORTSGR. KALTENLEUTGEBEN (Local Group, or Ortsgruppe, of Kaltenleutgeben) TOURISTEN VEREIN (Tourist Association)
  • The last words are hard to make out - most likely the specific locale name, or a specific hiking trail

  • Antique, late 19th/early 20th century, Austrian in origin

  • Attached to a welded iron stand, custom made for display of the sign

  • Measurements: Approx. 24" x 19" x 9" overall
  • Weighs about 10.5 lbs.

  • Condition: Good/Very Good overall. Please see photos below. All original. Paint crazing and fading from the age and decades spent outside in the harsh mountain elements. A missing screw bolt on the back. Outstanding display nevertheless!
