Antique A.D. 1692 Tabletop Bible Box Anglo-American Dated and Initialed


  • For your consideration is a very RARE and IMPORTANT 17th century artifact
  • An exceptional example of early Pilgrim Furniture 
  • All hand carved tabletop or "slant-top" Bible box made of dark stained oak
  • Dated and initialed up front "MH 1692"
  • Beautifully decorated with rosettes and the typical for the late 1600's "S" pattern shallow carvings with stippled background
  • Held together with wooden (treenails) and wrought iron square nails
  • The hand wrought iron butterfly hinges, hardware and lock are original to the piece
  • For an alike (companion) example, initialed and dated "IH 1690" see George C. Neumann, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" (L-W Book Sales, 1996), p. 48, fig. 179 (three views). 
  • Without any reasonable doubt, both pieces were crafted by the same hand (at least same workshop) for two closely related members of the same family, likely siblings or father and son, who were possibly reverends ...
  • Late 17th century Anglo-American, found in New England
  • There is some more recent history of the item, receipts from previous sales, which will be included. The known provenance is entirely pointing to New England
  • All original period piece of early furniture

  • Condition: Very Good overall. Great warm centuries old patination. Please see photos. All original and unaltered. A sturdy natural split to the back board, a minor triangle chunk at the lower left corner is detached. Missing the small metal latch, easy replacement
