  • It is Doppelmayr's Constellations map "Hemisphaerium Coeli Australe" 
  • Copperplate engraving from J. G. Doppelmayr's Atlas Coelestis
  • Published by Johan Baptist Homann in Nuremberg, circa 1720.
  • Original old hand coloring
  • A chart of the southern hemisphere constellations, illustrating the southern sky form the south ecliptic pole to ecliptic. The constellations are delineated based upon the catalogue of Johannes Hevelius and include Orion, Scorpio, Taurus, Eridanus and the Southern Cross. The constellations include some unusual additions, including the Peacock, Toucan, and a lovely unicorn called Monoceros. 
  • The corners of the chart are decorated with elaborate vignettes of the astronomical observatories at Greenwich, Copenhagen, Cassel and Berlin 
  • The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the charts.
  • Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750) was an acclaimed German mathematician, astronomer and cartographer. 
  • Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724, Nuremberg) was the most prominent and prolific cartographer of the 18th century. In 1702 he founded a publishing firm under his name. He produced hundreds of maps. His style is characterized with detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouches and vivid hand coloring. Appointed as Imperial Cartographer by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the VI, he had access to the most up to date cartographic information as well as to the "Privilege", an early copyright. Most of his maps printed between the 1715-30 have the inscription "Cum Privilegio". (ref.: geographicus)

  • Condition: Good overall. Please see photos. Scuffs around the edges, tear at the left border and another at the left corner, as pictured, commensurate with age. All original.
