This antique Navajo rug, also known as a horse blanket, is a true masterpiece of Native American artistry. Its intricate design features Spider Woman crosses, diamond mountain shapes, and traditional Navajo regional design. Handmade with care in the United States, this rug carries with it a rich provenance of family history passed down through word of mouth. As told, this rug/blanket was given to the previous owner in 1961 by a woman who was an heiress to the Almond Joy Candy bar. Beyond that, no family name was given, although the previous owner was from California, where this rug was gifted to him. The previous owner had this rug for 63 years and was told it was antique when it was given to him in 1961.

This rug is 57.5” long x 33” wide and weighs 4lbs 4ozs. There are some blemishes that I photographed close up, but in my opinion, these are not as noticeable in person. Also the photos show the beige background as lighter, but it is darker more light ochre in person or sand color. The weaving is very tight and secure.

The tribal affiliation of this rug is Navajo, representing a significant aspect of Native American culture. Though this rug is categorized as a collectible, it holds much more value as a piece of art that tells a story of tradition and craftsmanship. Its beauty and historical significance make it a unique addition to any collection.
